Nowadays it's almost too easy to have a car repossessed. Job loss can create havoc with household finances, and of course there are those folks who knowingly buy what they can't afford and just hope for the best. When push comes to shove, however, the lender wants his money and it usually means taking back the car. So, how can you buy repossessed cars?

Repossessed cars can actually be a great deal if you know what to look for and how to buy them. Often, the owner knows full well his car is about to be taken away. Once the loan is three months past due and the owner has ignored requests to contact the lender and discuss the problem, it's only a matter of time before a tow truck shows up to take the car.

Of course, lenders want to get back as much of their investment as possible so they aren't terribly interested in expensive repairs. They might fix some minor scratches or even pull out a tiny dent, but anything under the hood is left the way it is.

If you do head off to see a few of these auctions, you need to know what you're getting into. There are great deals there, you just have to understand what you're buying. You'll need to read the standard disclaimer that the auction house will give you as you enter.

Many places that sell "repo'd" autos will do so at auction, and anyone buying one of these vehicles is asked to sign a disclaimer stating you fully understand the risks, no refunds can be issued, and once you pay, there's no turning back.

Of course, if you can buy that Jag you've always wanted for $3,000 - who cares about anything else
